Birds find refuge in Panmunjom, 2011

Oil on canvas
24 x 38 cm
Unique piece

Panmunjom is a village on the de facto border between North and South Korea, a deserted buffer zone now populated only by wild life and nature. It was here that the armistice agreement ending the Korean War was signed in 1953, marking a return to the original situation and thus the division between two countries. The artist commissioned a Chinese professional artist to represent three birds in a nest. Each painting is isolated but can also be placed as diptyc, creating a dialectic of separation and conciliation.
